WHAT IS SPIRULINA?

Spirulina is a microscopic cyanobacterium in the shape of a spiral, from which it derives its name. It is commonly referred to as an algae because, although it is a bacteria, it is capable of conducting photosynthesis like plants and has a bluish green colour because it contains chlorophyll.

Native to countries in tropical and subtropical regions, such as Mexico and Chad, it needs a lot of sunshine, warm temperatures and waters.

THE HISTORY OF SPIRULINA

The Aztecs, the Mayans and the people of Chad discovered it hundreds of years ago. It was in fact a very important part of their diet, thanks to its high nutritional value.

  • It seems that spirulina played a very important role in the increase in population of the Aztec civilization. Spirulina was known as tecuitlatl, which means “food of the gods”, and appears in many chronicles following the arrival of the Spanish in America.

  • The Aztecs collected it from the surface of Lake Texcoco. They made a cake shape and left it to dry in the sun, or ate it like a cream.

  • Its use allowed the Mayan people to thrive even in wild lands unsuitable for agriculture.

  • In Chad, it has enabled many people to survive in adverse agricultural conditions.

  • When the Spanish arrived in America, they discovered that the population was well nourished, despite a difficult environment and a limited presence of food. One of the most important foods was spirulina

  • Even NASA has used it as food for astronauts!
